Yes, for the zillionth time in his career, Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens has voiced a complaint about not being more involved in the offense. simpson2.jpg
This, in spite of the fact he figured on 20 of the Cowboys’ 58 offensive plays they ran against the Redskins yesterday. He was thrown to 18 times and had two rushing attempts for 11 yards.
He finished with seven catches for 71 yards, including a touchdown.
Asked if he got the ball enough in the Cowboys’ loss, Owens said: “I would say no. I’m a competitor, and I want the ball. Everybody recognized that I wasn’t really getting the ball in the first half. I’m pretty sure everybody watching the game recognized it, people in the stands recognized it. I think my team recognized it. I didn’t quit. I kept fighting and trying to keep running my routes and trying to get open.”
Welcome to the beginning of the Cowboys coming unglued. It probably won’t happen all at once, but with a team of me-first guys – topped by Owens – it’s bound to happen eventually.
On a personal note, I’d like to thank Mr. Owens for spouting off after the game. After all, it’s the end of the month, we’re always glad for more page views, and Owens is Google search engine magnet when it comes to getting hits. The only more effective way to draw page views for Cowboys’ stuff is to mention Jessica Simpson … and … well … we just did.

Paul Newman gave growing old a good name, after staying young for so long that he had started to seem immortal. He was a serious actor, as well as one of Hollywood’s last superstars — he gave hard work a good name too — but what defined him, old or young, was his smile. Sometimes it was a jaunty kid’s smile on the preposterously handsome face of a grown man; sometimes a genial version of a wise-guy smile, tinctured with traces of self-irony to let us know he didn’t think he was wise at all. Most times he smiled as if the sun had just come out and he was basking in it.
His face was only part of his fortune. With the looks Mother Nature laid on him — the startling blue eyes (that were, paradoxically, color-blind), the strong planes of his cheeks and brows, the sensitive mouth (“You are all mouth,” Sundance tells Butch as the end approaches) — he might have landed nothing more than pretty-boy parts, and that would have been that. But he wanted to excel at the actor’s craft, even though he struggled with self-doubt in the early days of his career, so he studied first at the Yale School of Drama and later at the mecca of Method acting, the Actors Studio. After directing him in “Torn Curtain,” Alfred Hitchcock complained to François Truffaut that because Newman was a Method actor he couldn’t come up with the neutral look that the director needed in one scene. No one else ever described him as anything but a consummate professional, or, presumably, asked him to look neutral…Read full post here

Dow suffers record loss; world stocks plunge; Bush, House to try again

WASHINGTON – World financial markets reeled and stunned lawmakers groped for their next move Monday after House Republicans abandoned President Bush in droves to help kill his $700 billion proposal to rescue the financial services industry.
Even before the vote was announced, stocks began tanking on Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average nose-dived by more than 777 points, its worst fall ever, in a sell-off that swept markets around the globe.
As fears rose that the credit crisis was spreading, Asian and European markets closed sharply down, and governments in at least eight European countries took steps to begin rescuing large banking institutions.

Auto dealer Bill Heard Enterprises Inc. will shutter its 13 stores on Friday, the Columbus [Ga.] Ledger-Enquirer reported Sept. 24.
The shutdown includes Bill Heard Chevrolet in Sanford.
The company began in Columbus in 1919, founded by W.T. Heard Sr. It developed into the country’s biggest Chevrolet dealer for years and runs dealerships in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Texas and Nevada.
But the souring economy brought less demand for new cars and GMAC recently eliminated Bill Heard’s credit for inventory, the paper noted. In July 2007, Bill Heard also faced a $50 million deceptive advertising lawsuit and was bombarded with a litany of complaints from consumers in the states where it operated.
It closed a store in Arizona earlier in September.
According to its Web site, Bill Heard sells “around $2.5 billion” a year and employs more than 3,500.

Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) — John McCain said made a surprise announcement that he was suspending his presidential campaign and called on Democratic rival Barack Obama to postpone their first debate until Congress hammers out a plan to steady the financial markets.
Obama rebuffed McCain, saying it’s “more important than ever” for the candidates to tell voters how they would deal with the crisis. He said they can work with Congress while campaigning. “It is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once,” Obama said.
Both men said they wanted to reach a bipartisan solution to the credit crisis. McCain said the Bush administration’s $700 billion proposal to rescue struggling financial companies and unlock credit markets won’t pass Congress in its current form.
“It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the administration’s proposal,” McCain said in New York. “We are running out of time.”
The financial crisis has overshadowed the presidential campaign and both candidates have been seeking to demonstrate their leadership on the issue. McCain and Obama this week largely agreed on conditions they want included in any rescue plan, including limits on executive pay and a mechanism to recoup taxpayer money.
